About The Brand

Margaret Howell is a contemporary British clothing designer who has worked successfully in both men's and women's wear for nearly four decades.

In 1972 Howell began to design, make and sell shirts from a flat in Blackheath, south-east London, and was soon encouraged by orders from top US retailers, including Tommy Perse, Alan Bilzerian, and Howard Partman, who were looking for more classic, interesting English clothes. Howell opened her first independent shop in St Christopher's Place, London in 1980. Recognition followed and the label grew. A profile in French Elle in 1977 noted: “In her precise and meticulous working methods, Margaret Howell is more a craftsman than an industrialist.

Keynote designs are her take on the shirt, gymslip, lace-up shoe, duffle coat, and trench coat.

She believes it is crucial how a piece of clothing feels when worn. She feels it should be relaxed and lived in and have a natural look.

“I find men’s clothes interesting in their structure, feel, and functionality. I started by designing men’s clothes, and then found that women wanted them.”

She is inspired by the authenticity found in nature, people, and places and seeks the same quality in materials. She enjoys pulling threads of British tradition, quality, and skill together in clothes that are meant to be worn in the real world, where good design is about living with thoughtful style.
