About The Brand

Comme des Garçons was founded in Tokyo in 1969 by Rei Kawakubo and officially established in 1973. The name translates from French as “like boys”, reflecting Kawakubo’s challenge to traditional notions of femininity and beauty.

The brand rose to prominence in the 1970s, initially in Japan, before making waves internationally with its 1981 Paris debut. Known for radical experimentation, Kawakubo embraced black, distressed textiles, and unfinished seams; elements that shocked critics at the time but cemented her reputation as a pioneer of avant-garde fashion.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Comme des Garçons became synonymous with intellectual design, deconstruction, and a “anti-fashion” ethos, often blurring the line between clothing and art. Today, the label remains an influential force, celebrated for its boundary-pushing silhouettes, conceptual runway shows, and enduring legacy of redefining modern style.

Product History

Pre-Owned
C.2000

In 1981 Kawakubo launched one of her first true diffusion lines, Tricot Comme des Garçons. At first exclusively knitwear-focused, Kawakubo wished to explore a single category much more extensively than an ordinary ready-to-wear collection allowed. Like CdG Shirt, Tricot explores one category to its limits but opts for a technique (knitting) over a specific garment.
